at&t wireless outage in the Northeastern US - day 3: April 13, 2008

News/Info:

My at&t wireless service has been horrible for the past 3 days, and I am not alone. My wife and several friends in my neighborhood (in Bristow, VA) have been having the same issues. We are not able to reliably make or receive calls or text messages. Details on the problems we’ve been having are below in the My Story section.

I finally called 611 for at&t customer service, this evening, and the Customer Service Representative (CSR) told me that this issue is affecting quite a few customers. She rattled off a list of states that were reporting these issues, and although the list may not have included every state in the Northeastern United States, it definitely included most of them. I can say, for sure, that DC, Maryland, and Virginia were on the list, since those are the ones I was listening for.

The CSR found as much information as she could, for me, from her computer and from other reps. As of 5:25pm EDT on 4/13/2008, 3200-something minutes had passed since they first learned of the issue (note: There are 1440 minutes in one day). Although she couldn’t tell me when the problem might be resolved, she said that it’s a “priority” and they’re working on it. For what it’s worth, she told me that our 911 service was still fully functional.

If it’s affecting people in that many different states, I figure that means potentially millions of customers may be without reliable voice and SMS service. The outage does not seem to affect all areas, though, but I know it at least covers about a 5 mile radius around my house. So, the actual number of at&t customers affected may be a lot smaller, if it’s just a bunch of small areas that are experiencing these problems.

My Story:

My cell phone started having issues late Friday night (4/11/2008), but at first I thought it was just my phone acting up. I just upgraded the OS on my AT&T 8525 (HTC Hermes) to Windows Mobile 6 last week, and it’s had a few minor issues every day.So, when a friend of mine IMed me and said they kept getting sent straight to voicemail when calling my mobile number, I figured my phone was just being stupid. So, I tried making an outgoing call, but it just kept saying “Dialing” and could not seem to connect.

I checked my signal strength, and saw that I had only 1 bar. Usually, in my house, I have 3-4 bars and my cell phone works just as well as the landline. So I went outside, to see if my signal would improve. I think it went up to 2 bars or something, and after a couple tries, I was able to call out. But, the call was very broken up and staticky–pretty much useless.

Still thinking it could be my phone’s fault, I went back inside, turned off the phone, and removed the battery and SIM card. I left it that way for a few minutes, since that was one of the troubleshooting steps that a Cingular CSR had be perform when I had some kind of problem last year

After about 5 minutes, I blew the visible dust out of the back of my phone, put it back together, and turned it on. When it was done booting, I still had only 1 signal bar, but I tried to make a call anyways. As expected, it was still not able to connect, and when I told my friend to try calling me again, they said it was still going straight to voicemail.

Oh well, it was late at night, and I needed to go to bed anyways. I didn’t really need to use my phone, so I just hoped it would work better in the morning.

On Saturday, my family and I planned to go out and have a pretty busy day with some friends. I ended up having the kids at home while Lacey went out with her friends Jena and Anne. It was a beautiful day out, so my kids and I went outside and planted some flowers (I tried to call Lacey to find out where, exactly, to plant them, but could not get a call through, so the kids and I just kinda used our best judgement for planting locations.), then took care of some long-overdue outside work (cleaning plant debris off the deck and treehouse).

We were expecting Dallin and Xander to come over eventually, to hang out while the wives were out shopping. I could not seem to get ahold of Dallin, though. When I tried to call him (from my landline), it went straight to voicemail. When I tried to send a text message, the message stayed in the Outbox for longer than usual, then popped up an error saying that it was unable to send.

I retried it a few times, and eventually got it to send, after about 10 minutes or so. I didn’t get a reply, though. About a half hour later, I tried to text him again, but had the same difficulties. A few minutes later, though, I received 2-3 messages from Dallin. Apparently he didn’t receive any of my messages when I sent them, but they had just come through all at once. Along with those messages from Dallin, I also received one from Lacey, which had a timestamp of about 45 minutes before. I tried to reply to Dallin and Lacey, but still could not get messages to go out without several retry attempts.

By this time, my kids were bored out of their minds, and we were all wondering what we should do. I eventually managed to get a voice call to Dallin, and by talking fast and repeating ourselves, we were able to have a short conversation, despite the fact that the call quality was horrible and static dominated the conversation. The gist of the conversation was that they were at their house, and we were going to come over.

So, the kids and I went over to Dallin’s house. We wanted to go out and do something fun, like go to the park and/or Chuck E Cheese’s. The girls had been out for quite a while, though, so we wanted to coordinate with them before going out anywhere. Of course, we were not able to effectively communicate with them. Thankfully, they arrived at Dallin’s house shortly after we did.

We had more trouble communicating with one another that evening (from the park, Burger King in Gainesville, etc.), and still more on Sunday. It’s been quite frustrating for all of us. We take our cell phone service for granted, since it’s usually pretty reliable. Jena and Dallin don’t actually have a landline, anymore, so they are pretty much cut off from the world right now when they’re at home (or anywhere near home).

I noticed that when we took the kids to their swim lessons in Manasass, Sunday evening, our phones worked just fine. We still couldn’t talk/message with Jena and Dallin, though, since they were at home. This is the point when I realized that the service problem seemed to be confined to a 5 mile radius around our neighborhood.

While the kids were swimming, I went ahead and called at&t, which brings me back to where this post started: Widespread outage, no ETA for a fix.

I’ll post updates when I find out anything more. Hopefully this entry is useful for some of those at&t customers that have been having similar frustrations. I was surprised that when I Google searched the web, news, and blogs, I did not find anything about this outage, even though it covers a wide area and has been happening for about 3 days now.

LINKS: News and Reviews of the 10-23-2007 Danzig concert in Baltimore, MD

This is a follow-up to my review of the Danzig concert that I went to on Tuesday, October 23, 2007. I’ve been reading various reviews, news articles, and forum threads about the show, and decided to compile several of them into a list (in no particular order).

  • REVIEW: evb: start of the Danzig tour last night in Baltimore
    • Elizabeth (evb) posted the first review that I found about the show. She felt that the girl (apparently Doyle’s wife) pole dancing during Gorgeous Frankenstein’s set was a pitiful attempt to distract from the band not being so great. I agree with that, except I actually liked the distraction. Hers is one of the only reviews I’ve seen that actually said much about the opening bands, which is kinda cool, since my friends and I arrived pretty late.
  • REVIEW: RockN Roll Experience - Danzig 10/23/07
    • This is a thorough review of the Danzig show, with some excellent photos, and even a video of Glenn Danzig getting back up on the stage after having fallen off. There was a very detailed description of the events surrounding Glenn’s fall, and the impact it seemed to have on his attitude. They also described some events that happened after the show, including a roadie collecting stuff from the fans that stuck around the longest, and Glenn autographing one thing for each person. I was a bit bummed to read this, because we did stick around for a while, and all we got was a water bottle with a setlist wrapped around it. But, I didn’t really have anything to hand to a roadie to get autographed, anyways, so oh well.
  • REVIEW: Clint: All the CONCERTS I’ve ever been to: Danzig. 20071023.
    • My friend Clint maintains this list of all the concerts he’s ever been to, including short write-ups about many of them. His review of the 10/23/2007 Danzig show conveys many of the same sentiments I expressed in my own; primarily, major disappointment about the complete lack of Misfits songs.
  • NEWS: Baltimore Citypaper: Glenn Danzig Takes a Spill
    • This is the first item that came up in my Google Alert for “danzig misfits rams head”. Yes, I made a Google Alert, because I was curious to hear what other people had to say about the show. This article is where I found out about the RockN Roll Experience review (linked above), so thanks to
  • NEWS: Washington Post: Danzig Isn’t Up to Playing the Fall Guy
    • While it’s sort of cool seeing this covered in a major newspaper, I think journalist Chris Richards sensationalized it a little bit too much. He spoke of “Watching that killer set climax with Complete. Danzig. Meltdown.” but I think that calling it a complete meltdown is quite a stretch. I was right there, and did not even realize he was being grumpy and yelling at people. I may have seen a little bit of that, but if I did, it was not significant enough to remember. Maybe it was more obvious to people that were closer to the stage (I was about 10 people back, and to the side), but I wouldn’t call it a complete meltdown, because it didn’t cause the whole show to grind to a halt. I’ve been to a good number of concerts, before, and it’s not that unusual for a singer to walk off the stage, and come back within a minute. Glenn may have been in a pissy mood, but he did keep playing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it when he sang songs from my favorite Danzig albums (the first 4 albums). I just wish he could have done at least one Misfits song. No offense intended to Chris Richards, though. I actually really enjoyed reading the article. :)

More to come as I read them. Feel free to post links to other articles you’ve read, in the comments section!

Went to the Kwik-E-Mart, got on TV

Matthew, Skylar, and Xander with Marge Simpson Jena, Xander, Matthew, Skylar, Nikki, and Lacey with Comic Book Guy Dave with Homer Simpson

Well, I lived up to the promise I made when I posted about the 7-Eleven + The Simpsons Kwik-E-Mart promotion — I visited the Kwik-E-Mart in Bladensburg, MD on 7/27/2007.

I almost didn’t get around to it, but I really wanted to go! Earlier in the month, I even tried to get my team, at work, to go as a combination weekly status meeting / team building exercise. But, I wasn’t able to get everyone on board with the plan. The main drawback was that it was over an hour away, under normal traffic conditions.

It was getting towards the end of the month, so Lacey and I drove up there with our 3 kids (Matthew, Skylar, Nikki), our friend Jena, and her son Xander. We didn’t even think about the fact that it happened to be opening day for The Simpsons Movie, until we were about half-way there. We were wondering if there would be anything special happening at the Kwik-E-Mart that day. As it turned out, there was…

When we got there, we took a bunch of pictures outside, then went in and took pictures of everything Simpsons-related that we saw. It was fun taking pictures of some of us standing next to the life-size Simpsons characters. There were lots of other people there, doing the exact same thing, too. It’s a good thing they had extra staff working during the Kwik-E-Mart promotion, because it enabled them to handle the high volume of customers pretty smoothly. We bought a few Squishees, half a dozen pink sprinkly donuts, and a bunch of hot dogs for lunch.

While we were taking pictures of everything, we ran across a man holding a large video camera, who was recording all kinds of things. We talked to him, at one point, and found out that he was recording video for Fox 5 News! He recorded us in several places, including Matthew and Xander getting their Squishees, Skylar and Nikki looking cute (I don’t remember exactly what they were doing), and me getting my 6 donuts out of the display case.

When we got home, I programmed the Tivo to record the 10 o’clock news, and the 11 o’clock news on Fox Channel 5. We actually watched the 10 o’clock news in realtime, hoping to see ourselves on TV. At around 10:55pm, they finally did a Simpsons segment, which was about 5 minutes long. We didn’t quite get the face time that I’d kinda hoped for, considering how much he actually recorded of us, but I know they had to condense their footage to fit within the 5 minute segment.

In any case, it was fun for us to see ourselves on the news on TV! I was looking into ways to get the video clip from my Tivo to my computer, but ended up finding it posted on the Fox 5 DC website. Woohoo! To watch it, yourself, see the links below.

Pictures:
Pictures from our trip to the Kwik-E-Mart

Video:

There are two ways to watch the Fox 5 News coverage of the Simpsons Movie opening/Kwik-E-Mart promo (in which we made brief appearances):

1. Download the 10MB .flv file to your computer (to view with your favorite media player application, if you’ve got the right codecs)

OR

2. View it in your web browser (from its original location, on myfoxdc.com)

If you look carefully, and especially if you pause at just the right moment, you can see all of us in this video clip. I have yet to find an easy way to extract just those frames from the .flv file, but hopefully I will get that done at some point.

Anyways, my hands getting donuts out of the display case, and my bright green shirt, can be seen at around 1:20 into the video (NOTE: if you’re watching it on the myfoxdc website, start timing *after* the horrible local advertisement).

From 1:27-1:31, you can see me, all 3 of my kids, Lacey, Jena, and Xander; we’re in the background, behind the kid who’s talking.

Twelve 7-Eleven stores become Kwik-E-Marts

Regular 7-Eleven store plus sign Cartoon Kwik-E-Mart equals sign 7-Eleven turned into Kwik-E-Mart

From an article on msn tv news (and every other AP affiliate):

Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of “The Simpsons” fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.

Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO’s cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.

What an awesome promotion! I just wish more stores were getting the temporary face lifts. But I vow to attempt to visit the closest one (in Bladensburg, MD) sometime this month. To see tons of pictures of the real-life Kwik-E-Marts, check out the Simpsons Movie Kwik-E-Mart Mirror.

There’s also a sweepstakes going on, with the grand prize winner getting to be animated in an upcoming Simpsons episode.

American Idol 2007 finale

We watched the 2-hour finale tonight, which apparently ended about 10 minutes late. We didn’t watch it live, though; we watched it on the tivo, shifted about an hour later. So, when our recording ended abruptly, and they hadn’t even announced the results yet, we were kinda bummed. Apparently, they couldn’t fit everything they wanted into two hours. To reward their viewers, who cast a record number of votes (74 million or so), they didn’t even announce the results until after the show’s scheduled end time. So, anyone who recorded the results show using a Tivo, VCR, etc. did not get to see the results. Thanks, Fox/American Idol!

Incidentally, the winner was Jordin Sparks. I was happy about this, as she was my favorite since fairly early on. Last month, I mentioned that I expected either Jordin or Melinda to win. Blake beating Melinda seemed like a fluke, but his performance with that other beat-boxing rapper guy was pretty entertaining!

One other thing Lacey noticed in the finale show was this message (technically from Coca-Cola, but that was not terribly obvious in this captured frame):

Thanks for drinking.

(”Thanks for drinking.”)
